Orchard Road - SM Megamall

Hubby and I love good food. On our days in SM Megamall, we always pass by this new restaurant at the bridge connecting Mega Buildings A and B, the name Orchard Road.

The first time we decided to take a peek was when we had our minds set on eating at French Baker. We decided to go there, the next time we go to Megamall. Last week, we had the chance of sitting there and try their meals.

For first timers, you have to go to the counter and get their menu/order slip. There are little oval shapes beside each dish, which you have to mark to indicate which one you want to order.

Bring the order slip with your order marks to the counter, place your order and pay for the meal. Then you can go back to your seat and wait for the food to be served.

It was a cold day when we went there, so we decided to try their beef noodle soup

The good thing about Orchard Road is that they prepare everything the time that you place your order. When the bowl was placed before us, we were surprised at the size of the serving. It was huge! And we had a hard time finishing it up.

As for the taste, it was good. There's enough beef strips to make the noodle taste like beef and the greens made it more delicious. It wasn't salty, but it have a taste of fish. We found the source of the flavor, a tiny fish in the soup! Not bad, but if you like beef only flavor in your soup, you may not like their style.

For drinks, we had the cold barley. I know that barley is a grain and I was amazed at this drink. It was a little sweet (natural from the barley) and it took away our thirst, cleansed our palate to make us enjoy our food more.

I had their Lemon Chicken with Fried Egg and Plain Rice. I could say that this one is one of the better lemon chickens that I've tasted so far. Nothing spectacular, but it doesn't have is the taste similar to artificial chemicals used as lemon flavoring, which is something that I noticed when I order this from other places.

Hubby had beef teriyaki. I tried it and it wasn't so bad. Maybe a little salty for my taste, but nonetheless, it was edible.

My overall experience, it wasn't so bad. I might go back there and sample their other dishes. Although, I think I should go to Rasa and try to compare their menu, prices and taste.

How much did we pay for the entire meal? Less than Php 700. Not bad.

Spicy Sesame Chicken

I can't wait to share this new experiment that I made.

It doesn't look much does it?

I hope that after you get a taste of this dish, you would think otherwise.

What you need:

10 cloves of garlic, chopped
1K of chicken breat fillet (or any part of your choice)
1 teaspoon of fresh ginger (finely chopped)
5 tablespoons of sesame seeds
3 tablespoons of olive oil
5 tablespoons of cayenne powder (reduce or increase depending on your taste)
2 cups of water
1 cup of soy sauce
salt and pepper to taste

What to do:

Marinate the chicken in soy sauce, ginger, cayenne powder, salt and pepper for about 30minutes before cooking it.
Put the water in a sauce pan and add the chicken and marinade, boil until the chicken is tender.
In a separate pan, toast the garlic in olive oil, take out the garlic when it becomes brown.
Toast the sesame seeds, then add the chicken. Cook until the chicken is covered with sesame seeds.
Add half of the toasted garlic.

If you want, you can serve it with toast or steamed rice. Top the rice with the sauce made from the marinade and some toasted garlic. Enjoy the meal.

Spicy Shrimp with Lemon-Butter Sauce

I saw some shrimps from the vendor passing by, they looked fresh so I decided to buy some and experiment on it.

What you need

1/2K of shrimps (take out shells)
1 medium lemon, lime or 10pieces of calamansi (juiced, set aside half of the juice to make the dip)
1 egg beaten,
salt and pepper
fine bread crumbs (add a lot of pepper to make it spicy or get a pack of spicy chicken breading mix)
chili powder
3 tablespoons garlic powder
3 tablespoons of oil (olive oil works wonders)

What you need to do:

Marinade the shrimps in 1/2 of citrus juice, salt, and pepper be careful to not leave it too long or you'll end up with "cooked" shrimps.

Mix your breadcrumbs with salt, pepper, chili powder and garlic powder in a separate bowl.

Dip the shrimps in egg and coat it evenly with your spicy breadcrumb mix.

Fry in a pre-heated pan until golden brown. Put on paper towels to drain excess oil.

-For the dip

Melt non-fat butter on a pan, add lemon/lime/calamansi (the half that you set aside), simmer for two minutes.

Arrange the shrimps on a plate, top with cheese and serve with the dip. This dish goes well with toasted bread.


Red Mango - Indulge

My first taste of Red Mango was when hubby and I explored Eastwood City more. It was located on the second floor of the new Eastwood City Mall, but it was in the hidden part.

One time when we were walking in Megamall, we saw that there's a Red Mango branch there, we immediately made a beeline for it and here's what we had:

Mine was blueberry and cheesecake yogurt, yummy! Hubby had the mangoes and chocolate yogurt. also delicious.

What can I say?

The texture of their yogurt is just like ice cream.
Red Mango Eastwood City might be a little hard to find, but definitely worth going to. The store is a little small, but there are chairs outside of the store overlooking the dancing fountains.
Red Mango SM Megamall is sized decently, enough chairs to sit for customers.
The taste - you'll forget you're eating yogurt.
The toppings - range from fresh fruits to crushed grahams and chocolates, they even have cheescake too!
Price: 80 pesos (small) + 30 pesos for two toppings = 110 pesos, good, especially when the toppings last until the very last spoonful of the yogurt!

A bit of history:

Red Mango was founded in Korea and it has a policy of using all natural ingredients in the yogurts.

The first branches in the Philippines were the ones in Trinoma and Eastwood City. Today it has one branch in Greenbelt, Makati City and the newest addition to its growing chain is found in SM Megamall.

For their menu, they have two types of yogurt, original and green tea. I have yet to try the green tea, because I'm so satisfied with the original flavor.

If you want to try great tasting yogurt, visit Red Mango. And for someone who loves desserts, ice cream and chocolates, this is a great substitute when I want to indulge without feeling that I gained a thousand pounds.

Burgoo - Burgers and More!

Looking to satisfy my craving for a great meal, hubby decided to bring me to three different places last week.

Here's the first restaurant that we went to - Burgoo in Gateway Mall, Cubao, Quezon City.

From their long list of food items, we ordered the steak and shrimp platter.

What's on the platter:

Ribs
Spicy Shrimps
French Fries

option: corn cobs or rice, we chose rice

The food:

Taste: The ribs were tender and juicy, the marinade was just right. It tasted good even without condiments. The shrimps were small and not so spicy as one expects it to be. The fries were made from real potatoes, it was filling.

I suggest to not go for the rice, especially if there's more than two of you sharing the meal. The serving of rice was so small that it wouldn't even be enough for a single person.

The service:

We got there during the off-peak hours. The crew members were courteous and always had a smile on their faces.

It's good that the service was personalized, meaning there's only one person to serve you throughout the dining experience. Our server was fast and efficient. The drinks served in Burgoo are refillable, and our server did not wait for us to call him when our glasses were empty.

The Ambiance:

Do not sit near the windows by the mall side. I felt uncomfortable because people had the nasty habit of looking at our plate and what we were eating while they were walking by.

Aside from that, Burgoo still had crayons available so that their patrons can doodle on the manila paper spread on the table while waiting for their food. A great way to pass the time away. Our food was served within 15 minutes and we didn't notice the time passing by.

Cost:

We paid a little over Php700 for the meal. Acceptable.

Overall:

The food was good, not exceptional, but good. The serving size could have been good for three people had we not been so hungry that day. Service is something that you would expect from a place during off-peak hours (I still have to go back there during the weekends or peak hours to see if the service is still the same.)

Herbed Chicken Pasta

Scouting again for something new in my magazines, I came across this nice chicken pasta recipe.

Again, I used the recipe as an inspiration, but I added some twists to it to give it my personal style.

Things you need:

1K pasta (cooked according to package instructions and drained)
1K breast fillet (cut into small cubes) or 1K ground chicken breast
2 tablespoons of fresh parsley or 3 tablespoons of dry parsley
2 tablespoons of coriander
3 bay leaves snipped
1 small can of button mushrooms quartered
1 small green bell pepper cut into small squares
5 cloves of garlic
1 medium onion chopped finely chopped
1 pack of tomato sauce or pre-prepared spaghetti sauce
1/2 block of cheese grated or any cheese of your choice
3 tablespoons of olive oil (or any oil of your choice)
salt and pepper to taste

What to do:

Saute garlic and onion in pre-heated pan of olive oil. Add the chicken and let it cook, once the chicken is cooked, put in the mushrooms and the green bell pepper. Simmer for 5 minutes, then put the sauce, simmer for another 2 minutes. Add the herbs (parsley, coriander and snipped bay leaves), salt and pepper to taste.

Serve it:

Arrange pasta on a plate, top with sauce and grated cheese.

Stir fried veggies with tofu

In my goal to lose weight, I scoured my Food Magazine copies for a recipe that is not only delicious, but healthy as well.

I found a recipe called stir-fried vegetables with fried tofu. I only got an inspiration from the magazine and added twists and turns to the recipe. Here's what I did:

Ingredients:

3 blocks of tofu (diced and deep fry in oil with no transfat of your choice)
1 medium broccoli head (take stems out)
1/4 Kg of snow peas
1 medium green bell pepper diced
coriander
1/2 tablespoon of non-fat butter
1 head of garlic minced and toasted
1 onion chopped finely
salt and pepper to taste

For the sauce

1 cup of vegetable broth
1 tablespoon of cornstarch dissolved in 1/4 cup of broth
soy sauce
sugar, salt and pepper to taste

What to do:

1. Boil the vegetables for 2 minutes (drain and reserve broth for sauce)
2. In a pan, put 1 tablespoon of oil and saute onion, mix all the vegetables in it, add the butter
3. After 2 minutes add the deep fried tofu and coriander and stir fry for another minute.

For the sauce:

Dissolve the cornstarch in 1/4 cup of the broth, add soy sauce, salt, pepper to taste. Boil until it thickens.

Serve the veggies with sauce and top it with toasted garlic. Enjoy it as is or you can choose to eat rice with it.



French Baker A Great Dining Experience

Last Sunday hubby and I decided that instead of going out to different places, we'll just go around and look for the best food that we can find, afford and eat.

After walking around in Cubao, we landed in Megamall for dinner. We chose French Baker as our dining destination.

In their extensive list of food items on their menu, we ordered Soup in a Bread Bowl for starters

The soup was chicken soup for the soul, or at least that's how we looked and still look at it. The soup was served warm not hot, so we were able to eat it at once.

For his main dish, he ordered pasta carbonara.

Couldn't help but take a bite. It tasted as great as the presentation!

For my dinner, I opted for something light. It's like a croissant, with chicken a la king, buttered corn and carrots and fresh salad.

The chicken a la king is to die for. It was creamy, but light. Not the usual white sauce that seems so creamy and heavy. The buttered corn and carrots complemented my food so much that it tasted as if it was the best ever. Then lastly the salad. The vinegrette tasted sweet and sour. The veggies were cruchy and the mangoes on top made it so mouth watering that if I had time and my tummy could have accommodated it, I would have ordered the salad again.

For drinks, we had the mint lemonade

Refreshing, without the taste of sugar. The taste reminded me of freshly squeezed lemons and the mint cleansed my palate which made me appreciate the food even more.

The service, the crew were friendly and courteous.

The ambiance, for something located inside a mall, there's nothing to complain about.

Value for money, easy on the pockets. We only paid less than Php500 (five hundred pesos) for everything on our table.

Recommendations: It's a place worth checking out especially if you're quite on a budget.
