Since our favorite Mexican place closed some of their branches, we have been looking for something similar to it to satisfy our craving for burritos, nachos, tacos and the like. We found this place in SM Megamall called Taco Vengo! From the name, sounds Mexican, Curiosity led us to its doors and here's what I think of the experience.
Upon going in, the first thing I noticed is a very small, narrow walkway that led to the main dining area. The narrow path had some tables/bar style counters and some chairs. Now, if there were any customers sitting there when we decided to eat in the establishment, it would have been very difficult for people to maneuver in the area. Bad planning.
As soon as we sat down, a staff approached us to give us their menu.
It was nothing more than a clipboard with some pages of printed material that listed down their offerings. Okay, not really a good start.
The staff were courteous, they offered us water and glasses with ice. When she returned we placed our orders. While waiting, I decided to take a snap of the interior of the place.
I don't know what look they were aiming to achieve. I think they were trying to be rustic, homey, industrial, and everything else in between. Oh, by the way, we weren't drinking anything alcoholic. That bottle you see is their container for the water. Plus points on recycling. Now, back to the interior. If you look at one wall, it looks like it was covered by nice looking wood. However, on the other side of the wall, it looks like we were inside a clean bathroom. Clean, yes, but a bathroom still. Plain white tiles that look like the ones we have in our home bathroom. Not appetizing even for empty, hungry stomachs.
Finally the food came in:
|Nachos for Machos|
For one, the server said it was a hot plate, but really it was not. It looked like one but it wasn't even warm when it got to the table. The food, mediocre. The nachos on top stayed crispy, but as we got in deeper, the bottom chips were soggy because they absorbed all the cheese, mayo and what ever else they put on it. Not impressive at all. Before I forget, their nachos came with an uncooked egg that you were supposed to mix into the sauce. But like what I said, the plate wasn't hot enough to cook it with the sauce. They should really be careful with this one since raw eggs can pose certain health risks.
The next things that we had on our table were tacos or what they call to be tacos.
|Crispy Chicken Taco|
From the presentation alone, you would think it was unimpressive. I would have to agree with you. When I saw it, I was immediately put off by the fact that it was served on a stainless steel plate. Understood, less contamination. However, it made us feel that the food was served on a doggy plate instead of something made for people. Aside from that, the open taco shell was quite difficult to fold. It was small (5 inches in diameter) which made for a lesser area to hold the filling together. When I ate my food, the sauce dripped from the taco to my fingers in no time. I was a mess! Good thing they had an area where you can at least wash and sanitize your hands.
The crispy chicken taco was also unimpressive. According to my hubby, "just because you put at taco shell with it doesn't make it a taco."
Overall, the experience was more than disappointing. They should rethink their menu and presentation. Even when that time comes, I still would not even think of returning to the establishment.
